Making use of the high ceiling, Terraza utilizes mezzanine levels to extend the living space, creating a multi-functional area at a raised platform. This intermediate space merges semi-private areas with the common space, promoting interaction among family members. The segmented steps, instead of long stairs, connect the platforms and create a seamless flow throughout the flat. The wooden curve gliding along the ceiling from the foyer to the living area, across the dining area, outlines the path of the flat and ties the entire space together.
When it comes to material selection, durability and sustainability were key considerations. The design incorporates durable materials and user-friendly hardware, such as electrical hinges and smart lighting. Additionally, eco-friendly and bio-degradable ingredients were prioritized, including the use of E0 wood panels for furniture, which are toxic-free with low levels of formaldehyde.
Terraza is located in Park Avenue, a private housing estate in Tai Kok Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The 950 square feet apartment boasts a ceiling height of 4.3 meters, providing ample space for the design to flourish. The project commenced in April 2017 and was completed in September 2017.
The design of Terraza faced several challenges, particularly in maximizing the potential of the high ceiling while ensuring efficient space utilization. Multiple layout options were explored before settling on the final design, which incorporated mezzanine levels in the private areas and maintained full ceiling height in the common living area. Another challenge involved a low beam running across the plan, which was cleverly concealed by the wooden curve, adding a unique feature to the overall design.
Terraza's design philosophy revolves around simplicity and a connection with nature. By seamlessly integrating the mezzanine levels, the design extends the living space and creates a sense of harmony between different areas. The wooden curve, along with the choice of materials, further enhances the natural aesthetic of the design.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2018, specifically in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award acknowledges Terraza's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. With its fulfillment and positive feelings, Terraza contributes to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
